Lotus Notes 8.5 install under Sabayon Linux 5.0

Interestingly painless…

  • Download the .deb version of the Notes client from IBM
  • tar xfv <downloaded_archive>
  • unpack the Notes client and Sametime with ar x ibm_lotus_notes-8.5.i586.deb and ar x ibm_lotus_sametime-8.5.i586.deb into separate directories
  • unpack data.tar.gz and control.tar.gz in both directories (tar xfvz <archive>)
  • elevate your ego to higher levels (aka become root)
  • move the files in opt from the respective Notes client and Sametime directories to /opt
  • in the Notes client directory, open postinst. Around line 254 comment out some lines and add one  so it looks like this:

  • # If on a Debian system, check to see if we have previously written an
    # upgrade marker. If so, then set the action to "upgrade". This is to
    # handle the fact that even on an upgrade, a Debian postinst script action
    # is "configure", which doesn't give us an ability to distinguish initial
    # install and upgrade functions that we need to perform.
    #if [ -e /etc/debian_version ]; then
    # if [ -e /tmp/ibm_lotus_notes.upgrade ]; then
    # DPKG_ACTION="upgrade"
    # rm -f /tmp/ibm_lotus_notes.upgrade
    # else
    # DPKG_ACTION="$1"
    # fi
    #fi
    # ADD THIS LINE
    DPKG_ACTION="configure"

  • execute postinst in both directories
  • start Notes and *cough* enjoy *cough*

This of course only applies to the Gnome Edition of Sabayon. Your mileage may vary when using the KDE Edition – will probably have to install lots of Gnome packages and their dependencies.

    Hi Gordon,

    Thank you very much for those instructions. I need to get the Lotus Notes 8.5 on my machine and I am on Sabayon 5.0 (upgraded from 4.2 and have both KDE & Gnome). I followed your instructions and got the Notes running but have a strange problem: when the notes window open I can see the ‘Getting Started’ pane in the main area in the window just fine but when I try to switch to ‘Home’ or open ‘Mail’, ‘Calendar’, etc. this area is empty and I cannot make the information to show up.

    When start in console I get a lot of messages but several draw my attention:

    “libnuma: Warning: /sys not mounted or no numa system. Assuming one node: No such file or directory”

    And I see repeated many times following excerpt:

    A gdk Window is being destroyed out of DestroyWindow

    Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong or may be something is wrong with my system?

    Any advise would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks again!

    Hi,

    hmm… I remember that error – and I think I fixed it on another machine by following
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/427949
    and dumping the suggested work-around libraries from
    http://www.benkevan.com/upload/lotus_notes/
    into the Notes directory. Maybe that might work for you?

    … and it actually seems to be an officially acknowledged bug by IBM. So maybe (you never know with Notes…) it might get fixed.

    Thanks a lot for the reply and the suggestions. That worked for me too. Now I have the Notes. Thanks again.

    Glad it worked. Don’t know if I want to congratulate you on running this abomination of a software product though. 🙂

    I cannot agree more but sometimes we have to do what we have to do 😦 🙂

    Anyway, I am happy I will not need to run VM anymore just to check e-mail 🙂

    Ouch… x86_64 – that is asking for trouble in regards to Lotus Notes on Linux. I think I tried it once and simply gave up at some point, it’s a total mess. I am running ye’olde 32Bit versions on my desktops, too many problems for the cosmetical benefits that x86_64 *might* provide on desktop systems.

    Similar error but running IBM Sametime 8.0.2. on 64 bit Red Hat

    So, When does IBM plan to support modern (64bit) Linux ?
